Practical Puppery 101 - Puppy-Proofing

Puppy

  • Child safety latches on lower cabinets that contain cleaning products or anything harmful to your pup are great. Be sure to check them occasionally — your puppy might be a lot stronger, willful and agile than a toddler!
  • Know which plants are potentially toxic to your dog and keep them out of the house and yard, or out of reach!
  • Keep all medications, supplements and even vitamins out of your puppy’s reach. Eating any of these in large amounts can be extremely dangerous!
  • Use trash cans with puppy proof lids, even in the bathroom where razors and other hazardous trash may be discarded
  • Electrical cords look like fun chew toys to many pups. Be sure to safely wrap extra length of cords away from puppy’s reach, or run through pvc pipe.
  • When you are not home it may be wise to use a crate for your new puppy, until you know they can be left at home safely in your home environment. However, you should never leave a new puppy in a crate for extended periods without a potty break!
  • Providing your puppy with proper exercise and mental stimulation will help reduce destructive behavior and build a strong body and mind!

  • Remember, your new pup is a responsibility and privilege that must be taken seriously. Providing a safe, happy, healthy space will set the stage for a long, happy relationship for you both!
