Child safety latches on lower cabinets that contain cleaning products or anything harmful to your pup are great. Be sure to check them occasionally — your puppy might be a lot stronger, willful and agile than a toddler!
Know which plants are potentially toxic to your dog and keep them out of the house and yard, or out of reach!
Keep all medications, supplements and even vitamins out of your puppy’s reach. Eating any of these in large amounts can be extremely dangerous!
Use trash cans with puppy proof lids, even in the bathroom where razors and other hazardous trash may be discarded
Electrical cords look like fun chew toys to many pups. Be sure to safely wrap extra length of cords away from puppy’s reach, or run through pvc pipe.
When you are not home it may be wise to use a crate for your new puppy, until you know they can be left at home safely in your home environment. However, you should never leave a new puppy in a crate for extended periods without a potty break!
Providing your puppy with proper exercise and mental stimulation will help reduce destructive behavior and build a strong body and mind!
Remember, your new pup is a responsibility and privilege that must be taken seriously. Providing a safe, happy, healthy space will set the stage for a long, happy relationship for you both!
