Uh-oh! I Think My Dog Is a Freegan!

Is your dog a freegan too?

I recently watched a program about freeganism.

It made me a little uneasy but I couldn’t quite place why. It could have been the dumpster diving in the middle of night; bringing trash home and using it to create an elegant dinner party at a Park Avenue mansion.

No. That wasn’t it. It was a familiar kind of feeling. As if I had seen this before. In fact, seen it often. Freegans salvage discarded food. This really rings a bell!

Finally! It dawned on me! I live with a freegan! I just never knew there was a name for it.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t hide it anymore.

My dog – is a freegan!

Inside, nose is in everything, looking for a tasty morsel. Outside, nose to the ground, mouth at the ready.

Dog’s thought bubble:

“Do not waste.” “This food is perfectly good.” “Just because the store can’t sell it anymore doesn’t mean it’s past it’s edible date.” “There are hungry dogs in the world.” “I shall not waste.” “There is perfectly good food in that gutter.

Come on people. Let’s all admit the truth. To ourselves. To our dogs. To the world. There is no shame in it.

Our dogs are freegans and we are proud of them!

Perhaps a contest for “Best Freegan Story” might be in order. Here’s my entry.

In college, I had a half Lab, half German Shepeherd named “Primo.” The Boola-Boola Dog was quite the campus cruiser. In fact, my senior year, the dog catcher finally caught Primo. Paul Blart with a net acted like he won the lottery. But I digress.

Primo was known for arriving back home with a variety of “found” treasures. One day, he bopped in with an entire BBQ’ed chicken in his mouth. In fact, the intact, cooked chicken still had the spit traversing through the body. I’d shudder at the reaction of the backyard chef when returning to the grill only to find it empty. Exactly how this dog navigated a hot grill is a mystery he took with him.

While more of a Robin Hood story than Freegan, I still get a chuckle when thinking back to that afternoon.
